The Documentary Organization of Canada is the collective voice of independent documentary makers across Canada. It is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year.
The DOC Institute, an initiative of the DOC Ontario Chapter, develops and delivers industry-leading programs to help filmmakers succeed at every stage of their careers. Offering creative inspiration and insider advice, we’re a hub for the non-fiction community across Canada as part of DOC’s largest and founding chapter. The DOC Institute is a one-stop shop for professionals to learn business skills, hone their craft and make industry connections.

Job Description
DOC Ontario Chapter / DOC Institute is currently seeking a Managing Director to oversee fundraising activities, manage finances and supervise programming, staff and activities.
Fundraising duties include but are not limited to:
- Developing a sustainable and progressive fundraising strategy.
- Writing funding and sponsorship applications, proposals, and final reports.
- Growing existing relationships and new opportunities for DOC Institute with corporate, public agency, and foundation partners.
- Maintaining a calendar of funding and sponsorship deadlines.
- Working with DOC National’s Executive Director on programs of national scope.
Management duties include, but are not limited to:
- Collaborating closely with the DOC Institute Board of Directors to supervise delivery of its annual operational plan.
- Working with DOC Ontario’s treasurer and board to create and track the annual budget.
- Working with DOC Ontario’s treasurer and bookkeeping service to maintain timely and up to date payables and receivables – including regular banking duties –and generating timely financial reports.
Staff and contractor supervision duties include, but are not limited to:
- Supporting staff to deliver DOC Institute’s professional development programs. See additional information at www.docinstitute.com.
- Supporting staff with development of communication materials.
- Ensuring all program deliverables stay on-schedule and events stay within budget.
- Supporting staff and/or contractors to ensure sound event logistics and production for current and new programming.
Requirements
The ideal candidate will have:
- At least 5 years of fundraising and sponsorship experience, ideally within a progressive art-focused non-profit organization, and 3+ years of management experience.
- Interest in the Canadian and international media landscape.
- Familiarity with the Documentary Organization of Canada’s activities.
- Excellent professional communication skills (verbal/written) within a variety of contexts including grant writing, public presentations, marketing & PR, etc.
- Demonstrated management abilities with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail balanced with ability to think big-picture.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to build and maintain strong relationships and the ability to work effectively within a small and fast-paced team
- Proficiency with MS Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook).
- A track record of managing operational budgets and financing targets.
- Able to work occasional nights and weekends in Toronto, potentially with some travel, as required by organizational events.
